New roles for new ways of working

The way that we work must change, we have heard time and again throughout this work to tackle MS service variance.

Some of that change can mean utilising previously untapped resources, drawing on outside teams and expertise, or even developing new roles.

The role of the neuropharmacist is one that is rapidly changing, with neuropharmacy a specialism in its own right, and one which is now supported by its own MasterClass via the Neurology Academy.

The need for true multi-disciplinary care and the coordination required have also been highlighted, with Dr David Rog presenting the value of multidisciplinary team meetings at last year’s MS Variance event. Whilst multidisciplinary care has been encouraged as an optimal means of managing long term conditions for many years, its value in contributing to a revolution in holistic care is being encouraged anew for MS by the publications of RightCare’s Progressive Neurological Conditions Toolkit and the Elective Care Transformation Programme’s handbook for neurology. The administrative support needed to coordinate effective multidisciplinary meetings and services is still one which is often overlooked, and one of the posters submitted looked at this valuable role.

Encouraging excellence, developing leaders, inspiring change

MS Academy was established five years ago and in that time has accomplished a huge amount. The six different levels of specialist MS training are dedicated to case-based learning and practical application of cutting edge research. Home to national programme Raising the Bar and the fantastic workstream content it is producing, this is an exciting Academy to belong to.
